I learned about WVS database. The World Values Survey is a global network of social scientists studying changing values and their impact on social and political life, led by an international team of scholars, with the WVS association and secretariat headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden.

I am usually interested in age-related problems. Recently, South Korea has changed from an aging society to an aged society. According to the article, Korea has become an "aged" society just 17 years after it reached the point officially described as "aging" in 2000, the Ministry of the Interior and safety said Sunday. A country is defined by the UN as "aging" if the percentage of over-65s exceeds seven percent, "aged" if it exceeds 14 percent, and "super-aged" when it is over 20 percent. The population over 65 stood at 7.26 million in late August, according to the ministry, or 14.02 percent of the total population of 51.75 million. This is because fewer people are dying thanks to medical advances, fewer babies are born, and baby-boomers born between 1955 and 1963 will soon join the elderly population.

WVS database_ Social position: People in their 70s
When given the various indicators about the elderly, the situation in Korea is not good for the elderly. In the future, an aged society will continue. The population of the elderly is likely to increase rapidly. It is true that the elderly are socially disadvantaged. So, the government prepares various welfare policies for the elderly. Statistically, the economic condition of the elderly may have improved better than before. However, in fact, the social status of the elderly is considerably neglected. So, I surveyed the social status of the elderly. First, I read a theory about Max Weber's 'status'. Then I investigated the " Social position : People in their 70s " in WVS. I analyzed Korea and Germany in comparative sociology terms. Because Germany has long been prepared for the welfare policy for the elderly. Also, Germany has a real welfare policy to improve the elderly. After analysis, there was a big difference. In terms of 'very low social status', Germany ranked 1.4 percent and Korea ranked 10.3 percent. On the other hand, in the 'Very low social status' category, Germany ranked 5.7 percent and Korea ranked 1.9 percent. This clearly shows that the social status of Korean elders is very low.
What needs to be done to improve the social status of these the elderly?
I think that the welfare policy, such as the creation policy of a job and basic pension system, is urgently needed. Also, It is necessary to hire professional volunteer workers, not simply social services. In other words, national and corporate efforts should lead to action. Otherwise, in an aged society, the elderly will continue to be left behind.
