W6 Cultural Globalization /Hyunwoo Shin

1. Summarize in your own words of materials you read

There are several concepts and definitions about cultural globalization that I have learned from John Tomlinson’s thesis; ‘Cultural Globalization.’ They are, that the ‘globalization process’ is closely related to the economic sphere, when it exchange traits with another, in present times, due to the development of technology, culture itself does not have so much bond with its originated geographical regions, and there are dilemmas as ideas and conceptions from diverse cultures clash among members of global society.
According to the author, globalization itself is a complex process, due to the ‘increasing connectedness.’ Globalization is a phenomena that is multidimensional, including economy, politics, and technological spheres. Among all, Tomlinson states that the economic sphere is the most significant element in such process. This can be understood by studying the historical evidences and alternative terms for globalization, such as ‘cultural imperialism’, ‘Americanization’, and ‘Westernization.’ Examples are maps that were made by western cartographers, christians’ belief that ‘all men are brothers’, and Karl Marx’s depiction of a future communist society, observations having limitations of being ethnocentric in their origins, proving the term, ‘Westernization.’ In the world of capitalism, where money is power, having more developed technology, and sophisticated culture, means having more influence in international society. Thus, there is uneven exchanges of cultural elements in the process of cultural globalization.
Also, Tonlinson states that In the process of globalization in modern era, ‘deterritorialization’ is inevitable. Today, as communication and media technology develops, people are ‘telemediatized’, absorbing virtual information generated all around the globe. Which causes culture of specific region to be present in any part of the world, where it was not originated. This means, that you can enjoy oriental cuisine in the downtown of Toronto, Canada, or Western dishes in Seoul, Korea. Therefore, losing “the “natural” relation of culture to geographical and social territories“(Garcia Canclini 1995:229)
Finally, cultural identities clashes as a result of globalization. People with different nationalities tend to have different beliefs as a result of different histories, due to collective lessons that an ethnic group have learned through it’s own. Therefore, different identities has it’s own reasons and causes that are rational and this causes an inevitable dilemma in modern society.

2. Mention any new, interesting or unusual items learned

The most interesting standpoint that I have learned from this reading is that, the process of globalization is not always an equivalent transaction. These days, in a highly technologically developed world, it seems that the transactions of cultural influences have been evened up, thanks to the latest communication technology. We can easily see all the influences that has done by Korean entertainment such as ‘Gangnam Style’ or all the idol bands’ music videos hitting millions of views on Youtube. However, finding all the influences that the western cultures have had on non-western cultures is not that hard. There are many westernized buildings in eastern countries, rather than traditional buildings, and people in the east wear classical western suit for business, rather than wearing traditional clothes. Also, we can easily see American franchises in non western countries, such as KFC, Mc. Donalds, and Starbucks. Which means that the western culture has influenced the world so much with its traditional power of money and technology.

3. Identify at least one question, concern, discussion angle

As a Korean student, I find all the reaction videos on Youtube for Korean artists’ music videos, interesting. ‘Reaction videos’ refer to a video that is created by anyone who reacts to certain video clip that he/she is interested in. This video format is interesting to watch, because people always want to know how others react to things that he/she likes or dislikes. By looking at those reaction videos, we can learn that Asian cultural contents, nowadays, have substantial amount of impact on young generations of west. Like I have pointed out before, now that the structure of communication and the traditional power balance of the society is gradually transforming, due to the more advanced internet technology, I wonder how all the process of globalization is going to change.
