Sociology of Globalization

1. How would we define globalization?

Globalization refers to the phenomenon of exchange, in which many countries in the world are influenced by each other in various fields such as politics, economy, society, culture, and science. As I mentioned in the dictionary definition, exchange, or communication, is the key word of globalization. I think that the communication that was possible contributed greatly to the development of "the Internet". In modern times, communication has become easier as various media have emerged and developed. Therefore, I think that globalization can be defined as "communicating with countries in totally different environments through various media."

2. How could we measure cultural globalization?

There are also many categories in culture. Among them, I want to talk about food culture. The big category of menu we think when choosing a lunch menu is "Japanese, Western, Chinese, Korean". So we can recognize that it is very natural to eat food from another country. As eating is important part to people, so when we measure cultural globalization, we can measure the degree by measuring the number of restaurants in other countries that have been registered as business owners.

3. What are the most visible(successful) Korean wave elements in the world?

I think there are a lot of factors that contributed to the Korean Wave. Food, singing (K-pop), drama, movies and so on contributed to Korean Wave, but I think that plastic surgery is one of the factors contributing to Korean Wave. Many of the tourists coming to Korea are Chinese tourists. These Chinese tourists come to Korea and have a lot of plastic surgery. I think that plastic surgery is one of the elements of Korean Wave because the demand for plastic surgery is high and tourists often do plastic surgery.

  1. It is an interesting viewpoint that you think we can measure cultural globalization by counting registered foreign food restaurants in a country.

Also, I thought it is interesting that you pointed out the cultural aspect that is not easily seen, such as plastic surgery. However, now that the number of Chinese tourists have declined due to the diplomatic controversies, how will it affect your view point?
