1. Summary
What is globalization? Roland Robertson and
Kathleen E. White say the question is both very general and specific. Globalization
is general because it is linked to many disciplines. At the same time, it is
specific because there are many concepts in globalization. They also emphasize
that globalization is an essentially controversial concept. This is because
there are differences in the point of view of correct definition of
globalization. For example, developing countries do not want to accept
globalization justice from the perspective of developed countries. For this
reason, many scholars are concerned about the pluralization of globalization.
Velho approaches globalization in terms of
objects, perspectives, and horizons. Velho's paradigm is that globalization is
perceived as moving the world into one, leaving the worries about the scope of
the premise of globalization. Because globalization is connected with many
scholars such as sociology, anthropology, religious studies, and economics.
Globalization is characterized by increasing
connectivity. As the connectivity of the world grows, various conflicts arise.
Disputes between the United States and the Muslim countries of the Middle East
are representative. In Huntington's study, the relationship between the United
States and the Middle East is apparently a cultural (religious) conflict, but a
dispute over material things.
Many scholars define globalization as an
economic, political, and cultural dimension. The cultural aspect is becoming
more and more important. Ritzer studied the spread of American global
corporations to various societies. Despite attempts by global companies to
equally spread goods and services around the world, it has become clear that it
is necessary to adapt to each situation. This can be an example of the
complexity of globalization.
Robertson and E.White did not overlook the
social aspects of globalization. It is obvious that social interaction and
diffusion of communication and communication style play a pivotal role in the
process of globalization. In other words, an important aspect of globalization
can be defined as cultural, social, political, and economic aspects.
The present world is mainly made up of the
expansion of capitalism, but it is being resisted by dissident movements. We
must also see the world in a more diverse way. In many studies, we analyzed the
process of globalization in useful patterns. First, it is an international -
systematic aspect. Second, it deals with the concept of humanity. Third, there
are different components individually. Finally, there is a nation-state. There
are important points about this proposal. First, the nation-state should be
included in the process of globalization. Second, including individuals in
global change has been driven by the conviction that it is not practical to
exclude individuals. Third, the present international system is in a very
confused reality. Fourth, we are interested in the components of humanity.
The problem with the relationship between
global and local has created the concept of glocalization. Global and local are
likely to be the opposite, but they can be thought of as both sides of the same
coin. It is to cope with local situation globally. Glocalization has to do with
the question of what happens after globalization. Globalization is about the
problem of strongly changing the world into one place.
In conclusion, at the heart of
globalization are: First, globalization consists of two trends that increase
global connectivity and increase global consciousness. Second, globalization
takes a special form for all forms and purposes completed by the creation of
the United Nations Organization. Third, globalization consists of cultural,
social, political, and economic aspects. In addition, for a critical analysis
of globalization, it is necessary to achieve a sophisticated system for
globalization.
2. New,
Interesting or unusual items I learned
Globalization is proceeding in various
directions. People think about globalization mainly from an economic point of
view, but globalization is also taking place in cultural and social aspects. In
particular, it is easy to overlook the social side, and this article handled it
well. Globalization itself would not have been easy unless the proliferation of
communication and social interaction were premised on. When traveling abroad,
even if you do not know the language of the country, you can communicate easily
through sign languages that are commonly used around the world, such as road
signs, crosswalks, and traffic lights. The development of technology
facilitated communication and social interaction, and political, economic, and
cultural globalization is taking place based on this. Recently I think that the
development of the translation program enables communication and interaction
beyond nationality.
3. discussion
Since current globalization is based on
capitalism, some of the wealthy nations can influence the flow of the world.
Globalization also wants to transform the world into a place. This poses a risk
of uniformity. Developed countries with economic and political power can
infiltrate their culture, businesses, etc. for their own benefit. I also think
there is a danger to the new colonial era, such as the coffee republic and the
banana republic, which we talked about during class. Structurally, there is a
phenomenon that the developing countries are becoming the logistical bases for
the developed countries. These aspects must be revised in the course of
globalization.
