W3. What is globalization? Jo Sungbin

1. Summary
Q. What is globalization?
A. The article written by Roland Robertson and Kathleen E. White is quite hard but it solve my doubtful point about globalization. The mention of Roland Robertson and Kathleen E. White is very general and specific.

As we know, globalization is quite abroad concept. Global Governance can be a part of globalization. Transnational corporation also can be a part of globalization. Globalization is not complete concept. It is currently underway.

Roland Robertson and Kathleen E highlight that globalization is very controvertible concept because it related to discipline and perspective that be found in many different nation. So many scholars don't treat globalization as single process, they want to treat it as plural concept.
Representing, Otávio Velho, a Brazilian anthropologist, is treat globalization as plural concept and he defines the globalization as an object, a perspective and a horizon. In his paradigm, we can understand globalization as the movement of the world that as caky organism.

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, globalization is studied as sociology, anthropology and religious
studies. After the collapse of Berlin Wall and communism, the term ‘globalization’ is widely spreads. In the early 1990s the nation which has high position in economy market in the world, lead the world market. They make a lots of side effects under the neoliberalism. In the late 1990s, because of inequality in economy caused globalization and protest against capitalistic globalization, the anti-globalization movement is formed. They think capitalistic globalization, itself perceived as a part of the globalization. As many people concentrate the capitalistic globalization, social scientific factors were very ignored. But by the world becoming a ‘single place’, globalization can be developed in term of various social sciences. For this reason, globalization can affect on sociology, political science, anthropology and economics.

At the end of this article, there are features said by Roland Robertson and Kathleen E. White.
First, globalization has two direction. One is globalization can increase the global connection, and the other is it can increase global consciousness.
Second, globalization focuses on nation-states, world politics, individuals, and humankind. These terms are consummated by the United Nations. It means globalization has a itself’s form and purpose.
Third, globalization is consist by four facts of human life, cultural, social, political and economic. They are complementary and swell in specific time and place. Ritzer’s McDonaldization can be a great example in this part.

2. New, interesting or unusual items I learned

Before read this article, I think globalization only economical aspect. But after read this article, I definitely know the various aspect of globalization. Also I want to know the examples of political globalization. I think the lead of capitalism and the collapse of communism can be the one of examples, am I right?

I think because of the development of media, globalization can be made. Advanced media can connect us and exchange our civilization. But in the past, some country exchange their civilization, at least with the continent as a unit. We can call it as geographical similarity. Like in china, korea and japan, we used chopsticks, we had sitting culture and we were monarchy. Is globalization expansion of this concept?

3. Discussion point

Despite I read and study about globalization. But I still have worry about the side effect of capitalistic globalization. The nation that have more money and more power in the global market must lead the trend of this world, and they will be more powerful and rich nation. I know that globalization has a advantage and it makes world more advanced. But it will makes world more unfair. We can easily find these examples like ‘coffee republic’ and ‘banana republic’. By using globalization, many advanced country will make excuse. How can we prevent this problem and how we can protect the developing country from colonization of capital.
